AN EXQUISITE CORPSE: TOWARDS OPENING NIGHT
Since 2019 Simon Vincenzi has been working on different variations of developing performance texts through the form of the ‘exquisite corpse’. Working online and with different artists, performers and theatre makers, each one has been developed through a process of association, where no one person can be in control of the evolving possible narratives.
In 2022 he began worked with Daniel Oliver, Gill Addison and Kath Duggan and used documentation of a secret reconstruction of John Cassavetes film Opening Night as it’s starting point. After a period of three months the work was completed as a linear progression of 22 parts.
The next stage of this project begins with a year-long residency at TACO! They will use the text that they created as a source to develop four new parallel play texts. Again, working online, each of the four plays will be constructed as 22 scenes that mirror and reflect four different readings of each of the original parts. The four collaborators, in their different worlds, become poised manipulators of a mysterious language of complexity.
The resulting four texts will be presented at TACO! in August 2025.
