OPENING NIGHT [The Second Woman]

At the centre of this work is a virtuosic rendering of the soundtrack of John Cassavetes film Opening Night. Kath Duggan attempts to articulate the voices of all the films characters as she hears them through Bluetooth headphones for the first time. The work becomes a rehearsal for a film that already exists, an incantation, a possession not just of a singular presence but of the absent film itself.

The event took place in a studio beneath a block of flats. The audience entered through a parallel space; a constructed dressing room full of flowers and bottles of champagne in which a second woman prepares.

Soundtrack: Roberto Sassi

Duration: 2h 24m

OPENING NIGHT [The Second Woman] is part of a trilogy of works that reconstruct films exploring performance and disappearance. The project is called THE SCREENS and the other two films are Cammell & Roeg's PERFORMANCE and Fassbinder's DESPAIR.
